The comfort of a dog

I personally don’t have any pets now. But for years and years we always had a dog, and cats at various times. For a short time we had Jonathon the bird. Many people, though, cannot imagine life without a family pet (or two, or three…). When those friends encounter a challenging time in life, taking the first steps in offering help and nurturing is easy – it can begin with the dogs and cats!

Since so many people feel very uncomfortable with friends fussing over them, fussing over their pets is the perfect way to ‘open the door’ of assistance. When a friend was taking her daughter to numerous lengthy doctor appointments, lining up dog walkers was so helpful.

There have been many times when I’ve visited a sick friend only to hear tales of the fun gifts the dog received, or the way friends fussed over the dog. These stories were told with great joy and pride. Translation: fussing over the dog made the friend feel better!

So next time you pick up some puppy treats or toys, grab some extras to drop off to a friend going through cancer treatments, or mending a broken leg. After all, loving our friends pets is often similar to loving their children!

Today's Quote: One reason a dog can be such a comfort when you're feeling blue is that he doesn't try to find out why. ~Author Unknown
