The Gift of Songs

It is hard to believe it has been three years since Caroline called to ask if any of Laura’s friends might be interested in singing Christmas carols for her. Laura’s brain cancer was causing pain and nausea that prevented Laura from being able to sit up for very long, so she was unable to attend church, and she really missed the music. Being the wonderful sister she always was, Caroline wanted to do what she could to make Christmas special for her special sister, and she knew music would help.

An email was sent explaining the gift we would provide to our dear friend. Anyone interested could gather at the appointed place at 5pm. No need to RSVP; just show up.

Approximately 50 friends gathered, ranging in age from 6 months to 70+. We walked the two blocks to Laura’s mom’s house, sang our five carols, hugged Laura and wished her a Merry Christmas. It was a joyous time, and it certainly started the holidays the right way – doing something from our hearts that could make a difference.

Our gift of song cost no money. The coordination involved sending a few emails. Yet so many friends were able to collectively give something that will long be remembered by Laura’s family, and by each person who sang that day. Organize your friends and share the gift of song this week with someone who needs some extra cheer.

We didn’t know it at the time, but that was the seed that grew to become WhatFriendsDo.com. Our celebrations of the Twelve Days of Christmas that started a week later started to transform so many of us, and helped evolve the ideas for spreading special cheer for those going through life-changing events.

It gives us great joy to know that this holiday season thousands of people are being touched by sharing their time and cheer through suggestions on WhatFriendsDo.com. Life is a gift – share it!

Today’s Quote:

Life is a song – sing it.
Life is a game – play it.
Life is a challenge – meet it.
Life is a dream – realize it.
Life is a sacrifice – offer it.
Life is love – enjoy it.
– Sai Baba
